Whispers of Cool: Summer Retreat at Chengde Mountain Resort

When scorching heat blankets the city, do you find yourself longing for a refreshing escape? Just northeast of Beijing lies a timeless refuge—Chengde, where the Bashang Grasslands send gentle breezes of 21°C (70°F) through the air. Cradled by mountains, with over 60% forest coverage and an abundant river system, Chengde’s geography and temperate continental monsoon climate make it a natural summer sanctuary.

At the heart of this cool oasis stands the Chengde Mountain Resort, also known as the Imperial Summer Villa—once the Qing Dynasty’s imperial retreat and now the largest surviving royal garden in China. Construction began in 1703, during the 42nd year of Emperor Kangxi’s reign, and spanned 89 years. In 1711, the emperor bestowed the name “Bishu Shanzhuang”, personally inscribing its plaque. In 1994, it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with its surrounding temples, under criteria (ii) and (iv).

Covering 5.64 square kilometers, the resort harmoniously blends natural beauty with imperial architecture, unfolding like a classical Chinese ink painting. It’s divided into four scenic areas: the Palace Area, Lake Area, Plains Area, and Mountain Area—each with its own distinct character.

The Palace Area, located in the southern part of the resort, served as the emperor’s residence and administrative hub. Today, it houses the Chengde Mountain Resort Museum. At its heart stands **Danbo Jingcheng Hall, a grand structure known as the “Hall of Nanmu”, built with rare golden nanmu wood used for pillars, beams, and intricate detailing.

To the north, the Lake Area evokes the charm of southern China’s classical gardens. Eight small islands and a network of embankments create a mosaic of lakes that hold 31 of the “72 Views of Kangxi and Qianlong.” These scenes mirror the refined beauty of Jiangnan landscapes. Notably, the “Smoke and Rain Pavilion” (Yan Yu Lou)** is a striking replica of its namesake on South Lake in Jiaxing, Zhejiang.

The Plains Area opens up into expansive grasslands once used for imperial horseback riding and hunting. This open terrain contrasts beautifully with the surrounding lushness. Further in, the **Mountain Area** beckons with towering peaks and secluded valleys. Visitors can board the mountain loop shuttle for panoramic views of landmarks like Puning Temple and the iconic Hammer Rock (Bangchui Mountain).

Travel Tips & Visitor Info:

1. Transportation: The resort offers boats in the Lake Area, sightseeing vehicles on the plains, and mountain loop shuttles through the hills.

2. Weather: While the resort remains pleasantly cool overall, some areas are exposed to direct sun—so bring sunscreen and stay hydrated.

3. Wildlife: Near the Lotus Garden, you may spot three elegant black swans. As they are protected, please enjoy them quietly and from a distance.

More than a royal garden, Chengde Mountain Resort is a sensory journey—through shaded groves, echoing history, and the gentle rhythm of nature. The chirping of cicadas in leafy corridors, the evening breeze over the grasslands, and the reflections in still waters all offer a rare peace. It’s a place that welcomes all who seek relief from the heat—and whispers cool serenity to every soul that passes through.
